Always remember that on this planet, and within the scope of our perception, we are experiencing all of humanity and probably even the living planet, all at the same time (or at least within our perceivable time - the proof of this is that a thought is travelling at least at the speed of light).
A grosser aspect of this is of course if one is joined in a group-think. What can be described, by myself anyway, as a meta-mind. In this, one can easily be fooled into thinking that it is oneself. But take a moment to think and meditate on this. It may be that one is able to see the disconnection in oneself.
The Buddha is right. All perception is illusion. If you fear something than that fear becomes you. If you love something, likewise. But is it actually you? Did the fear come from you or are you just perpetuating a learned response? The answer is yes and no. You are the sum of your experiences so yes it is you. However, it is not you. The you you CHOOSE is actually you. But both are indivisible. So there is the you of the sum and the you of the choice, also part of the sum of experiences.
It is actually better to look at oneself through the lens of real action, if one were to try to define oneself. This way one is actually able to encapsulate who one is in something actually definable, instead of being caught in the infinite possibilities of perception - which in itself is illusion.
Makes me think of the serial killer that will probably be the death of me. In his perceptual life and sum of it, he has accumulated a lifetime of murder and evil. His inclinations also fall that way, but he does not see himself any deeper than this. Hence this IS who he is.
